$1 billion solar farm to be built in South Australia

solarpanels AusBNAusBN - A US$1 billion solar farm and battery project, located in the Riverland region of South Australia will go live by the end of this year.

The large-scale project will be built by Australian battery storage developer Lyon Group, who claim that the system will be the largest of its kind in the world, with 3.4 million solar panels and 1.1 million batteries.

SA Premier Jay Weatherill commended the Riverland initiative, which will provide up to 330MW of power generation and at least 100MW of storage.

The facility will plug a gap in the state’s energy supply left by the closure of Port Augusta’s Northern Power Station, which was shut down in 2016.

However, the solar power development comes with the additional bonus of being a large-scale source of renewable energy, as opposed to the coal-powered plant at Port Augusta.

Lyon Group partner David Green said: “We see the inevitability of the need to have large-scale solar and integrated batteries as part of any move to decarbonise.

“The combination of the solar and the battery will significantly enhance the capacity available in the South Australian market.”
