Queensland coal industry boosted by BHP Mitsubishi Alliance

Coal fire in opencast coal mineAusBNAusBNOnline - BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance has announced it will create more than 200 new jobs in two Bowen Basin mines, handing a welcome boost to the ailing coal mining industry in Queensland.

The Queensland Resources Council (QRC) has praised the move by BHP Mitsubishi Alliance, with chief executive Ian Macfarlane labelling the new positions another sign of the ‘green shoots for the Bowen Basin’.

Macfarlane commented on the slow recovery of the industry, which had struggled through a downturn over the past few years.

"It’s a step in the right direction. We have seen towns like Townsville and Mackay battered quite heavily by the slump in the coal industry and we're now seeing more positive news,” He said.

"It follows on from the good news we are seeing right across the Queensland coal industry with record exports last year and new mines opening up."

Skilled labour workers will arrive on the Peak Downs and Saraji mines later this week.
